It’s a new day for the senior community. No longer is a 65 year old set to retire and rock in the chair on the front porch. Mom and dad are more active today with oh so many options. As mom and dad progress over time here are a few things to consider.

At some point in time mom or dad may need the safety protection of a medical alarm should they fall or have any other type of emergency when they can’t reach the phone for help. The average age of the elderly obtaining a one appears to be about 80 these days. Of course, many seniors need a medical alarm system sooner and some never need one until they are well into their 90’s. It’s just a smart thing to be proactive about, don’t wait until mom or dad falls and start to lose that beautiful smile you have grown to love.

Smart Phones and iPads: The group of seniors in their 80’s adopting these magnificent devices is one of the largest segments of the population. Smart phones are not only for communication but play an important role in mom’s safety when out driving away from home. What if she has a flat tire? What if she gets lost like all of us do? What if you need to reach her?

Then there is the fun and exciting part of Smart Phones and iPads for your parents.

Teach them to text and talk to their grandchildren. Imagine their beautiful smiles once they have this task down. Imagine their joy when your son or daughter sends them that first text. It’s magic!

Teach them to download the music they love to listen to. I’m sure you will find like most of us they are stuck in one decade’s music or another. Maybe Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin or whomever they love. For just 99 cents or less they can engage their memories associated with their music, just like us. How often does a song bring that memory and then smile to your face? Mom and dad may find it confusing at first to learn how to find their music so taken some wonderful quality time with them, it certainly will be time well spent.

Teach them to use the camera feature and share photos. I know they would just hate to receive random photos of their grandchildren. Your kids, and you, will love to surprise mom and dad with random photos sharing the love.

Teach them how to read books on an iPad. Do you have any idea how wonderful it is for a senior to be able to expand the text on a book? It’s remarkable. Help them jump into the modern electronic data age.

Lastly, let’s discuss the need for a safe home environment for mom and dad. A medical alert service placed in the home before a fall or need for help occurs when mom or dad can’t reach the phone for help is imperative. If you wait for the first, second or third fall to occur when mom can’t get help when she needs it, she will begin to lose confidence. When mom or dad loses confidence life begins to drastically change. Don’t let their confidence disappear, show the love and concern you have for them, protect them with a medical alarm now.

Besides, a medical alarm will give you "Peace of Mind" too.
